Oklahoma Centennial - American Melody: An Oklahoma Centennial Celebration with the Music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Free. This Friday, November 16, at 7:00 at the William G. McGowan Theater inside of the National Archives Main Building, located between 7th and 9th on Constitution Ave, NW. Metro: Yellow or Green Line to Archives/Navy Memorial Station.
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Oklahoma’s statehood, join us for an evening of bracing Americana from the pens of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The program will feature songs from the musical Oklahoma! and other works that convey themes of nationalism and regionalism. Smithsonian curator Dwight Blocker Bowers will offer historical insight into the cultural influences that guided the creation of Oklahoma! and other key works in the Rodgers and Hammerstein canon. Performers include singers Judy Simmons and Doug Bowles, with piano accompaniment by Alex Tang.
