Location: Washington District of Columbia Jewish Community Center
Nextbook and the Washington DCJCC proudly present Peter Cole, who will discuss Hebrew poetry written in Muslim and Christian Spain.
In his monumental new book, The Dream of the Poem: Hebrew Poetry from Muslim and Christian Spain 950-1492, poet and translator Peter Cole opens a window into one of the great periods in world literature. This collection of 400 poems shows how Jewish poets mixed their own traditions with those of their Arabic-speaking neighbors to create something entirely new: a body of literature that is spiritual and sensual, humorous, and tragic.
The author of two collections of poetry, Rift and Hymns and Qualms, Cole has translated poems from both Hebrew and Arabic, including the work of Taha Muhammad Ali, and Aharon Shabatai. Peter Cole was the recipient of a 2007 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and the 2008 National Jewish Book Award for Poetry.
