Normally I don't write much on my blog but since it is officially World Water Week, I wanted to pass on a personal connection that I have to this effort. More about Tap DC's participation in World Water Week below.
I recently got an email from my friend Max who is in The Peace Corps. He doesn't email often as he is living in a remote village in Panama called el peƱon and has to travel for hours to a place that has internet access. Apparently, the village that he is living in is so remote that clean water is not even available. They make due drinking from local rivers, streams, and underground springs. The natural consequence of parasites and amoebas are a constant threat and there are severe water shortages in the dry season when children and the elderly have to carry their water in buckets and pots from local sources, sometimes miles away.
Max is currently trying to get a water recycling program there. It is a sustainable and affordable solution that involves using water catchment systems to draw pure rainwater from the zinc roofs of the houses which could than be stored in 55 gallon containers. There are about 80 homes which are in the town now that have the potential to provide clean, renewable, free water for up to a family of 10 for the majority of the year. If you are interested in donating, each cache costs about $40 and whatever you are able to give helps. If everyone donates a little, I am sure he can get it done! About Tap DC...
During World Water Week, March 22-28, pay $1 or more for a glass of tap water at participating DC area restaurants and you’ll give a child clean drinking water for 40 days. Help raise funds and awareness to fight the second largest killer of children under five worldwide – the lack of clean drinking water.
To see information about Tap DC's events and the more than 100 participating restaurants, please visit www.tapdc.org. I love the logo of the cute blue cup with the DC flag on it! Nice design on the site. I missed the reception party tonight at Pepco but it looks like there is another event this Sunday, March 28th at Piola Restaurant in Arlington. Drink specials and hors d'ourves will be served and Piola will donate a part of the night's proceed to Tap Project. Piola is located at 1550 Wilson Blvd, in Arlington, VA and should be metro accessible along the orange line. My guess is Clarendon, you may want to confirm at www.wmata.com
