Modern Western square dancing has evolved from what you may remember from grade school: It grew up and got cool. Most of the music is contemporary, non-country — ranging from pop to disco to show tunes. The dance is energetic and fun.
DC Lambda Squares, the DC area’s GLBT and inclusive square dance club, is offering a free series of three introductory dances this summer. No partner, experience or special “costumes” needed! Our caller will have non-dancers dancing in no time. Additional dances July 23 and Aug. 27.
Most major U.S. cities have a gay square dance club, including New York, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Baltimore and Philadelphia, offering opportunities for travel to regional dances. The International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs holds an annual convention, most recently in DC.
