VOICES is a monthly event series designed to raise funds and awareness for grassroots organizations across the globe that support youth empowerment, development and leadership. Local spoken word artist Flex Mathews hosts this month's VOICES, which will be doing something extra special for July as part of the Nomadic Wax 'Cape Town to DC' Artist Exchange. With delegates all the way from South Africa and their counterparts from DC, July's VOICES will include an in-depth discussion about what it takes to start youth movements and the challenges youth organizers face around the world. The discussion will be moderated by DC's own Fred Joiner, and will focus on case studies based on each of the panelists personal experiences. The event will include Emile YX?, Kokayi, DJ RBI, DJ Thee Angelo, DJ Asho, WaterFlow, and Mazi Mutafa, founder of the local non-profit - Words, Beats and Life. Music featured during this evening will be Afrobeat/Hip-Hop/Funk/Soul.

Proceeds from this event will go to benefit Heal the Hood, an organization in South Africa formed to help youth gain skills, jobs and empowerment. Heal the Hood projects include endeavors to help youth combat racism and xenophobia, and events to empower youth through competition, performance and community outreach.
