Field Trip Theatre presents a staged reading of Danielle Mohlman’s “Stopgap” this Saturday afternoon at the Cleveland Park Library.

About the play: "After a glass of wine at a birthday brunch, May announces that she’s going to turkey baste her way into pregnancy. The same morning, David tells his husband Robert that he wants to adopt. It’s November 8, 2008 -- four days after Prop 8 passed in California. This dark comedy delves into the lives of six individuals living just on the outskirts of their suburban California town, trying to find their own definition of family in this heteronormative community they call home.”

“Stopgap” is directed by Elena Hight with dramaturgy by Jamila Reddy. The reading features Caitlin Diana Doyle as May, Pomme Koch as David, and Enrico Nassi as Robert. Elizabeth Frerking, Steve Isaac, and Angela Kay Pirko round out the cast."

About Capoeira: "Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art disguised as a dance and performed to musical instruments and traditional Brazilian songs. It is comprised of specific offensive and defensive movements and, unlike in other martial arts, the participant is constantly in motion because of the basic movement, the ginga. The movements also consist of positions on the ground, kicks, sweeps and acrobatics. Some believe that capoeira originated in Africa, others say that it was formed in Brazil. The regional style of capoeira originated in the 1930s in Brazil and, unlike capoeira angola, is usually practiced to a quicker beat and kicks are performed in an upright and aggressive style."

The center piece of the Michael Craig-Martin: Drawings exhibition is a large 5 ft. x 4 ft. wall drawing created on site especially for the gallery. The show includes more than 30 drawings of subjects drawn from ordinary life, which he portrays using a mechanical line. On January 10, 2012, the artist created a large wall drawing in the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery. This video was created by William Atkins and Christopher Boyes from the Office of External Relations.

The spill causes a butterfly pattern rather than a stain. While the objects in the show exemplify the rigor and attention to detail typically associated with Scandinavian design, they also embody creative collaboration with the user."

Some background about the program: After the closing of VSA Washington DC (formerly an affiliate of the Kennedy Center) in August, St. John's Community Services (SJCS) successfully transitioned the program, its staff, and artists to ART Options, a community-based, arts-infused program for people with disabilities.

Creativity in Our Community features paintings which share the stories of those artists supported by SJCS who use art as a vehicle to communicate and ultimately inspire. The exhibit, which is on display in the Mandarin Oriental gallery space, will be available to view and purchase at the opening evening and through January 2012.

The exhibit showcases pieces from Liana Finck’s upcoming graphic novel based on The Jewish Daily Forward’s “Bintel Brief” advice column. Through the column, young immigrants sought advice on a variety of heartbreaking and absurd dilemmas. Finck’s illustrations capture these letters as seen from the point of view of a narrator – an omniscient but relatively helpless columnist inspired by the Forward’s founding editor, Abraham Cahan.

Liana Finck graduated from Cooper Union and received a Fulbright Fellowship to Brussels to write a graphic novel about Georges Remi, the creator of the beloved comic book character Tintin. She is a recipient of the prestigious Six Points Fellowship, a two-year grant for emerging Jewish artists.

The Pastrana Tapestries were commissioned in the late 1400s, likely by the king of Portugal, Afonso V (1432-1481), to commemorate his 1471 campaign in Morocco. "Following the Washington, DC band Beauty Pill's summer 2011 open recording residency at Artisphere, the Immersive Ideal project returns with a multimedia installation designed by Kelley Bell and Stephan Moore. The installation will feature a user-interactive, monome-controlled array of photographs from the recording sessions by Nestor Diaz, Morgan Klein, Brian Libby, Jon Pack and PJ Sykes.

From January 7-22, you can listen to Beauty Pill's new album--recorded at and presented exclusively at the Artisphere--while immersed in the photographs that document the band's experiment in radical artistic transparency. The installation will run in the Black Box Theatre itself, where the recording took place, furthering the intimacy between the viewer/listener and the work.

The Immersive Ideal is part of Notasphere, a month of programming created by local artistic collaborators. From a pop-up restaurant and political cartoons to Brazilian beats, Artisphere will be filled with fresh, thought-provoking off-beat arts events presented by creative partners from across the DC-region throughout January 2012."

"Dystopia" is a two-person exhibition featuring recent paintings by DC artist couple Dana Ellyn and Matt Sesow. For "Dystopia" Ellyn and Sesow selected and created new works inspired by classic Dystopian novels, movies, and themes. Additionally, the couple has pulled from news and commentary sources such as Democracy Now, Russia Television, Al Jazeera, Alex Jones, and CSPAN.

Some of the paintings are a re-imagining of a degraded and totalitarian future, while others offer a social commentary on current events. According to Ellyn and Sesow, the Dystopian future conjured within so much of classic literature turned out to be an accurate prediction of current events, politics, and perceived individual freedoms.

The New York City based punk band "Drunken Sufis" will be performing during the opening reception of "Dystopia". The "Drunken Sufis" mix raw edge sound with politically charged thoughtful lyrics... taking no prisoners while dissecting the actions and influence of American policy.

VSA sent more than 20,000 calls for entry to high schools and colleges around the country, inviting submissions from emerging artists with disabilities, ages 16-25, who are living in the United States, that illustrate the theme Momentum.

Participants were asked to examine the creative spark behind their work.Selected from over 120 submissions, this year's 15 recipients were awarded a total of $60,000 in prize money generously provided by Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. The resulting exhibition showcases the diverse viewpoints and variety of creative processes of these emerging artists as they gain momentum in their artistic trajectories. The artwork on display is an unprecedented opportunity to experience these young artists' works at the inauguration of their careers.

The 2011 award-winning artists are Dimelza Broche (FL), Holiday Campanella (PA), Will Copps (DC), Angela Godoy (MD), Brian Kellett (OH), Krista Kuskye (IN), Emily Gail Lyles (SC), Artur Matveichenkov (PR), Emily McPeek (CA), Caitlin Miller (DC), Xi Nan (MD), Sonya Seitz (PA), Jansen Smith (FL), Rea Walsh (PA), and Beth Zarden-Benson (WI). This exhibit, designed by the US Geologic Survey, displays 40 award-winning satellite images. Although the satellites are used to monitor important natural processes, these images of the earth’s surface have been chosen for their aesthetic appeal, rather than for their scientific value. Pictured above is the Parana River Delta a huge forested marshland about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The 40 images are on display for one year, and will subsequently become part of the LOC permanent collection. On view outside of the Geography and Map division in the James Madison building. Learn more and view images here.

This exhibit features 125 prints and paintings by female Western artists exploring Asian cultures between 1900 and 1940, focusing on the work of four artists: Helen Hyde (1868–1919), Bertha Lum (1869–1954), Elizabeth Keith (1887–1956), and Lilian Miller (1895–1942), all of whom trained as painters but, while living in Japan, also designed woodblock prints. By investigating the intersection of American art, East Asia, and the woodblock print movement, Visions of the Orient explores the various ways that "the orient" served as a liberating professional space for these female artists and as a place of creative inspiration.
