PAST: TALK: "Beauty in the Shadows: Wrought Iron in Washington National Cathedral" An Evening with Nol Putnam WED, March 25 at 7:30pm, Free, RSVP

Beauty in the Shadows: Wrought Iron in Washington National Cathedral
An Evening with Nol Putnam
Wednesday, March 25
7:30pm
Free, RSVP here
Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Ironwork adorns Washington National Cathedral, as it does many great buildings. From massive gates and grilles to delicate chandeliers, crosses, and liturgical embellishments, ironwork graces, enhances, and speaks. The hands of a master ironworker transform this rigid material into fluid shapes: leaves, flowers, people, animals, and—here—biblical stories.

Nol Putnam’s work joins that of Samuel Yellin and many other artisans in the National Cathedral. Putnam’s new book, Beauty in the Shadows: Wrought Iron in Washington National Cathedral, catalogs this collection with insightful descriptions and beautiful photographs by Cathedral volunteers Chris Budny and Jim Pittman and contributions by researcher and docent Barry Bem.

Join Nol Putnam for the Cathedral launch of his book and an insider’s look at wrought iron. You’ll gain new insight into this ancient craft and art form.

This symposium will examine the role of the craft museum in modern culture. Coinciding with the renovation of the Renwick Gallery, the Smithsonian’s national craft museum, this program seeks a lively dialogue on craft’s institutional mission, and the execution of programming devoted to the collection, conservation, presentation, and study of craft. The issue of how to interpret the field of craft in a museum setting is increasingly urgent as the boundaries of its teaching, practice, reception, and the discipline’s very definition shift dramatically in the first quarter of the 21st century.

"The good news: solar cooperatives have formed in every ward of the city, and the District Department of Energy (DDOE) recently announced an expansion of funding to assist low-income residents with solar panel installation. The bad news: Our progress in solar energy could be threatened by a merger of our local utility Pepco with utility giant Exelon."

"Meditation: A Tool to Balance Your Life - Body, Mind, and Spirit"
led by Gerry Gorman at the Cherrydale Library in Arlington, VA
Wednesday, March 11
7:00pm - 8:30pm
Free

"We live in a fast paced world, filled with challenges and constant demands made on our precious time. Wouldn't it be nice if we could step back, take a little vacation from all the tension and find a place filled with joy, bliss and peace?"

When we learn how to meditate, we find such a place within our very selves. The practice of meditation contributes to a more positive, healthy lifestyle. It is an invaluable tool helping people reduce stress, gain a deeper sense of fulfillment in life as well as foster greater physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Join Gerry Gorman as he connects meditation and spiritual development to important aspects of our lives. He will offer a practical technique of meditation that can positively impact your life. Through first hand demonstrations of this simple yet highly effective method you will discover the key to deeper concentration, relaxation and profound personal growth. The presentation will also allow time for you to ask any questions you may have.

About the presenter: A student of meditation for over 30 years, Gerry studied with two of the most respected mystics of our time: Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj and Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj. He is an example of how meditation can be practiced by someone while living a traditional western lifestyle. He describes a very practical form of meditation and explores how this practice can help each of us develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Gerry has been married for over 30 years and has two grown children. He has worked as a professional engineer, engineering manager, and business development executive for a number of computer controls and technology companies. Today, he has his own company, Emergency Message Controls.

This free workshop is organized with Science of Spirituality DC. SOS DC offers free meditation workshops throughout the the DC metro area and at their beautiful DC Center. Opening Fiercely; Transformation through the Power of Opening Meditation event at MLK Library
7:00pm
Free
"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud became more painful than the risk it took to blossom." - Anais Nin "Opening is a cornerstone to transformation... Opening releases the grasping of our mind and emotions, creating an emotional fluidity where grief, sorrow and pain just don't really stick. Through opening to those who challenge us the most, we experience compassion and empathy. Through opening to the dark and hurt parts inside, we release the power they hold on us." Join Alev Gunay in a talk on the power of opening and how, using meditation-based techniques, opening brings you closer to the depths of your true self, creates a more fluid emotional arena, improves relationships and unlocks pathways to experience spiritual realms. Alev recently moved to DC after spending a year doing full-time meditation practices at the Clairvision School's retreat center in California.
