This Wednesday, in conjunction with FELA!, WPAS artist Melvin Deal and the African Heritage Dancers & Drummers, one of the first “Black Performing Arts,” companies originating in the Inner City Shaw communities of Metro-Washington, D.C., will be presenting their work.

Melvin Deal (video) is a veteran artist of some Forty Years of experience, as a performer, lecturer, teacher, and founder of the institution. The recipient of many prestigious awards, among which includes, the Washingtonian of the Year Award", 1981, Urban Leagues "Whitney Young Memorial Award", 1983, "Cross Roads Africa Award”, 1984 and numerous City Council Proclamations and Resolutions. Mr. Deal Travels to Africa frequently to study and authenticate his work by working with master artists and receives master artists from Africa, who work with and become members of his company and genesis their own companies.

Five Days, Five Nights is based ased on a novel by Álvaro Cunhal. Set in 1949 Portugal under right-wing government control, this drama follows a 19-year-old political fugitive and the resourceful but mysterious older man who agrees to help him. (Portuguese w/ English subtitles). Followed by a discussion and Q&A with director, José Fonseca e Costa, from Portugal, via Skype!

Now based in New Jersey, Mustafa was born in Amman, Jordan to Palestinian parents who were refugees after the 1967 Six Day War. It’s her belief that history is best viewed from a personal perspective, and individual stories add richness to a people’s collective history. Her photos, in black and white, and in color on canvas, share secret images of family, hidden among the olive trees and arches of her home.

I was at this market the other month and really enjoyed it! Got some cute felt, flower earrings, a red headband and a cute, wool finger puppet for my friend who recently had a baby. Definitely some adorable crafts here, price points range but you can find some things for around $10. The market takes place in the tree-lined square (aka Ballston Circle) right across from the metro near the cosi. The market features 35 local artists and crafters who design unique pieces that are 100% handmade!

Exhibition curated by art historian Marisol Argüelles, who places nine photographers into five distinct but interwoven groups; Fiction and Literature, Science Fiction, Apocalypse, The Ordinary World, and Ricardo Alzati. The artists of Possible Worlds are part of a new generation of photographers that breaks away from the tra­dition of photojournalism, archetypes and traditional models. Influenced by film, literature, fantasy, science fiction, electronic music, they delve into alternative worlds as conceived by the human mind." Possible Worlds includes work by: Mauricio Alejo, Alex Dorfsman, Kenia Nárez, Ricardo Alzati, Daniela Edburg, Fernando Montiel, Katya Braylovsky, Rubén Gutiérrez and Demián Siqueiros.
