VOICES (Voices Organizing for International Change and Development) is a monthly fundraiser and awareness event featuring international hip-hop music, multi-media presentations, live performances, food and wine! This month will be supporting Amurt, a 501 C3 and a volunteer-led international organization founded in India. Amurt’s work in Kenya has focused on youth and community improvement by creating nine youth resource centers in Nyanza—central and coast provinces—that provide youth with a safe place to meet, sports opportunities, IT classes, language classes, and life skills training that will assist them in finding a job. To date they have trained 135 youth peer educators to dispel myths and stigma associated with HIV and AIDS and have creatively used hip-hop and the arts to educate countless young people about regular HIV testing and sex education.

The free evening will feature over 150 musicians and dancers from 11 different Turkic nations who are uniting for an epic US debut. The event is held in celebration of the New Year holiday Nevruz, observed in most part of Eurasia, celebrating the start of spring and regarded as the first day of the year when the sun enters the house of Aries. The word Nevruz is of Persian origin and is a combination of the words “ nev” (new) and “ruz” (day), meaning new day.

Performers will be participating from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Gagauzia (Republic of Moldova), Crimea (Ukraine), Republic of Tatarstan (Russian Federation), The Republic of Bashkortostan (Russian Federation), The Tuva (Russian Federation), Hakkassia (Russian Federation). This US debut concert will be a colorful display of each region’s unique, traditional customs, costumes, music and dance.

The concert is co-sponsored by The U.S. Azeris Network (USAN) and the U.S. Turkic Network (USTN) and presented by TURKSOY, The International Organization of Turkic Culture.

Come out to Hillyer's first ever “Swap Shop” event. Bring unwanted clothes that are in good condition and trade them with fellow swappers for something you love! In addition to laypersons like you, there will be a variety of vintage clothes vendors at the event, from whom you can purchase that “one of a kind” item. For each item you bring you will be given a ticket you can then exchange for another item of your choice. All the clothes will be laid out and hung up so that swappers can browse and socialize before the beginning of the swap is announced. The event is open to both men and women, and there will be separate rooms for each.

Anything left over from the swap will be donated to the registered charity Martha’s Table.

In the spring of 2006, Jason Hamacher was given a rare opportunity to enter and photograph one of the world's oldest synagogues, The Great Synagogue of Aleppo, Syria, best known for housing the Aleppo Codex which was once the oldest complete manuscript of the Hebrew Bible. The synagogue's foundation dates to King David and has been continually built upon since. The show features select images from Hamacher's forthcoming book, Aleppo: The Essence of Syria, which aims to reveal Aleppo, Syria's modern and ancient presence as seen through the eyes of its Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities.

Directed by Edgar B. Howard and Tom Piper. Produced by Edgar B. Howard. Presented with the National Trust for Historic Preservation as part of the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital.

Ticket/Reservation Info: Pre-registration encouraged. $8 for Corcoran members, members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Environmental Film Festival supporters; and $10 for the public. FLASH is a month-long event created by FotoDC and sponsored by the Crystal City BID. The Penthouse (12th & 13th Floors) of 2450 Crystal Drive will be filled with exciting photography shows and events. FLASH will encompass two curated photography exhibitions, a library of photography books, and a lounge for refreshments and discussion.
