Come out for “Healing Through Art” the second installation of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities’ three-part series entitled Curate Your Culture: Community Conversations. 

This conversation will explore how local DC organizations are using the arts as an outlet to heal and explore the minds and bodies of those within our community.

Storyteller, Rev. Joani Peacock, will kick off the evening with a 10-minute story about living with mental illness and the role the arts can play in recovery. Afterwards there will be a panel discussion that will focus on how the arts and humanities are playing a critical role in the health and healing of those facing physical and psychological challenges. How can creative expression help individuals suffering from terminal illness, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), emotional distress and other physical ailments?

Patrícia Carvalho, is a dentist by profession, has practiced Raja Yoga meditation for 25 years, and is the coordinator of the Brahma Kumaris in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Marli Medeiros, is an executive life, career coach and has practiced Raja Yoga meditation for 33 years. She is the coordinator of the Brahma Kumaris in Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Come celebrate Exposed: The Secret Life of Roots with this concert series featuring American roots music. Ian B. Walters is a regular at the DC Folk Festival and roots music venues throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Despite his young age, Ian is a member of the piano faculty at the Augusta Heritage Center's annual Blues Week in Elkins, WV. He uses various styles, including Boogie Woogie, Honky Tonk, and New Orleans Stride and Ragtime to demonstrate a historical approach to the development of American Popular Music.

This award-winning Sundance documentary is a fascinating look at the American Black Power movement between 1967 and 1975 from the perspective of a Swedish film crew. The film contains journalistic footage never seen on U.S. TV plus intriguing interviews and sound bytes from civil rights notables Stokely Carmichael, Melvin Van Peebles, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis and others. The Rolling Thunder First Amendment Demonstration Run is an annual ride and gathering that first started in 1988. Riders from around the nation, and even around the world rally in the Pentagon parking lots and begin the run through the streets of D.C. Afterward, it is an opportunity to meet old and new friends, pay respect at the memorials and participate in the Memorial Day events. Bikes leave the North Pentagon parking lot to begin their run through the Mall area. After the run, police will direct riders to West Potomac Park, where they will pay tribute to their fallen brothers and sisters.

The U.S. Army Military District of Washington will conduct a Presidential Armed Forces Full Honor Wreath-Laying Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, to be followed by an observance program hosted by the Department of Defense in Arlington’s Memorial Amphitheater. A prelude by the United States Marine Band will begin in the amphitheater at 10:30 a.m. Both the wreath-laying ceremony and the observance program are free and open to the general public. No tickets are needed to attend these events. Space is limited to standing room only for the wreath-laying ceremony and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis in the amphitheater.

Stories of looting of the world’s cultural heritage abound in the press today. Almost daily the destruction and theft of antiquities appear listed among the atrocities of war. But these crimes are not limited to wartime, and they are not new. Questions of looting and how to address it are thousands of years old, and writers have grappled with these issues for just as long. Archaeologist Zoë Kontes will discuss the intersection between looting and literature, with a focus on Mediterranean antiquities. She will also suggest texts for further reading on these topics, both ancient and modern, including Margaret M. Miles, Art as Plunder: The Ancient Origins of Debate about Cultural Property, and Chasing Aphrodite: The Hunt for Looted Antiquities at the World's Richest Museum, by Jason Felch and Ralph Frammolino.

German-Israeli diplomatic relations commenced on May 12, 1965. Marking the 50th anniversary, this event looks at the ways the past affects the lives of young Israelis and Germans today. The screening of An Apartment in Berlin will be followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker Alice Agneskirchner, young German Action Reconciliation Service for Peace volunteers and young Jewish Americans who participated in the Germany Close Up – Jewish Americans Meet Modern Germany program. With introductions by representatives of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Embassy of Israel.
About the film: An Apartment in Berlin (Ein Apartment in Berlin) (Germany, 2013, 84 min., Director: Alice Agneskirchner). An estimated 20,000 young Israelis have moved to Germany’s capital. They are mostly attracted by its cosmopolitan and international atmosphere, the low cost of living and the good infrastructure, all of which make life fairly easy. But Berlin was also the place from which the Nazis planned the systematic extermination of the Jews. Three generations after the Holocaust, does this fact matter to young Israelis? How does it affect their lives today? Three of them want to find out what it would do to them to embark on a journey into the past by retracing the life and refurnishing the original apartment of a Jewish family from Berlin once deported by the Nazis.

As part of the 14th annual Washington DC Lindy Exchange (DCLX), there's a swing dance in Dupont Circle, complete with live music! Based in Baltimore and DC, the The Butler Parks Hot Serenaders play 1930s small-combo jazz in the tradition of Artie Shaw’s Gramercy Five ensemble and Benny Goodman’s septet. The Butler Parks Hot Serenaders specialize in the performance of traditional and original swing and pre-bop repertoire. The band gets its name from the location of the Jam Cellar, DC’s fine Tuesday evening swing dance. Located next to Malcom X / Meridian Hill Park, the Josephine Butler Parks Center is a historic 40-room mansion originally built to be the home of the Vice President.

Washington ArtWorks opens its’ expansive visual arts facility and Resident Artist studios to the public for a full weekend of art shopping, music, and food trucks. The event will feature hundreds of pieces of art including photography, painting, pottery, jewelry and glass as well as artist demonstrations, local food trucks La Strada, Holy Crepes, and Carmen’s, and live music. “With over 50 resident artists and over 30,000 square feet, we are the largest visual arts facility in Montgomery County,” said Missy Loewe, CEO & President of Washington ArtWorks. “We only do this twice a year so it’s always a massive event!” Resident Artists will be on hand for demonstrations, art sales, to talk to visitors, and give studio tours.

DC's reigning World Champions of slam poetry, DC Youth Slam Team hosts this open poetry mic and showcase featuring rising spoken word artists from South Africa who are visiting the U.S. for the first time, bringing their poetry, music and art to the DC community!

The artists from the City of Tshwane/ Pretoria are touring in the U.S. as part of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities’ Sister City International Arts Grant.  

Artists: Vangi Gantsho, Phomolo "Flex" Sekamotho, Bianca Mashyle, Ishmael "Phiziks" Sibiya, Sphephelo "ZuluBoy" Mfundo, Refilwe Majoko, Rolland "Simpi" Motaung, and Lenah Mashiya.

While in D.C., they will be hosting the 2015 Louder Than a Bomb DMV Teen Poetry Slam Festival with the national poetry and social justice nonprofit, Split This Rock, and working with youth programs in local high schools.

April's DC Youth Slam Team Poetry event is held in conjunction with the April Gallery Show, Black Lives/ White Light at ReCreative Spaces DC.
