Studio H opens Amalgamations, new work by Steven Pearson. Pearson paints large scale work and has created a 9’ x 9’ installation piece for the gallery. Inspired by the deluge of quotidian information we are subjected to via social media, television, radio and email, Amalgamations translates this cacophony into vibrant colors and shapes that clash with one another eventually resulting in what Pearson calls “visual white noise”. The latest in the Not in Our Town series, the film carries on the tradition of documenting how communities organize and act together to prevent and repair the problems of hate crime to create an environment of safety and respect. The Meridian International Center hosts the first film in this new film series. Tonight's film is part of Abigail E. Disney, Pamela Hogan, and Gini Reticker’s Women, War & Peace series. The film follows the efforts of three Afghan women: a savvy parliamentarian who participated in writing the Afghan constitution, a former midwife and one of the last women’s rights advocates remaining in Kandahar, and a young activist from a traditional family in Kabul.

Q&A discussion to follow with guest speaker J. Alexander Thier, Assistant to the Administrator and Director, Office of Afghanistan-Pakistan Affairs, USAID. Moderated by Tamara Gould, Vice President, ITVS International.

This film is part of Women and Girls Lead, a major public media initiative to support and sustain a growing movement to empower women and girls, their communities, and future generations. Women and Girls Lead is spearheaded by ITVS in partnership with CPB and PBS.
