Opening Reception for “Art Crimes – Holzer & Hyatt” New works by Anson Holzer and Magida Hyatt at The Dunes in Columbia Heights
Free
Opens Wednesday, March 13th

The Dunes presents an exhibit of large scale paintings by two local artists with international influences.
10% of all art sales will be donated to Syria Relief Fund Development.

Magida Hyatt was born in Damascus, Syria, to a Palestinian family from Nazareth. She grew up in Tunisia until the age of 13 when her family moved to the United States. After graduating college, she taught French before moving with her husband, a foreign correspondent, to Bangkok, Thailand, and then to Britain where she attended the London School of Design. She later opened her own interior design business in the Washington, DC area. “My art is inspired by the natural, political and social worlds, their paradoxes and contrasts and conflicts. Both the strength and vulnerabilities of nature and humans are important to me. I look to my emotional responses to the natural world and the human condition for ideas of what to paint. My compositions are driven by form, color and texture, and are affected by my travels and exposure to many cultures.”

Composed primarily of charcoal and inks, Anson Holzer's works are designed to encourage an ambient environment. His work is often associated with the Color Field movement, Minimalist art and geometric abstraction. His palette is tightly controlled and exhibits a very precise use of color, contrasting monochromatic textural backgrounds against precise and often explosive foreground elements, which are strongly symbolic of themes that lie within mankind’s common search for spiritual knowledge and truth. Anson Holzer began his study of ink-work with calligraphy in Taipei at Wen Hwa University in 1997, completed his BA degree in the Arts at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001 and his MA in Buddhist Studies in 2012 from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka. His large works have been shown and sold throughout the United States and abroad.
