Both exhibitions confront racial stereotypes by superimposing the human body against a backdrop of socially accepted mores, the com-modification of “the ideal lifestyle” and by juxtaposing wealthy DC neighborhoods with its poorest.

Enjoy interactive art, music, photography, fashion, and poetry documenting the history of Go-Go from its African, Latin, Jazz and Funk roots to the present. Curated by DCCAH Resident Curator Zoma Wallace "Go-Go Swing honors the collective contributions of the District's Go-Go community to the city and the world," said Judith Terra, Chair of the DCCAH. "We are pleased to be able to take a multi-media approach to showcase the influences of Go-Go's influence on popular culture." Listen to cassettes from shows from the '80s & '90s while viewing the artwork and instruments -including one of Chuck Brown's Gibson guitars, on loan from the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum- played by Go-Go pioneers.

Photographer, scholar, and author of the critically acclaimed book of poems called The Maverick Room, Thomas Sayers Ellis has contributed greatly to the visual narrative of this exhibit. "As one of the city original art forms, Go-Go Swing highlights the major contributions of the local arts scene to making our city a wonderful place to live, work and play" said Lionell Thomas, Executive Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

Join William Smith, retired Army Lt Colonel as he discusses the extraordinary effect of meditation to reduce stress-related responses, improve concentration, enhance clarity of thought and mental equilibrium. He will also present a simple, yet powerful meditation technique that can enrich one’s life personally, professionally and spiritually.

This meditation talk is organized with Science of Spirituality DC, which offers free meditation workshops throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including the DC area. He currently directs the Darshan Meditation Camp, a summer camp for children, and assists in managing a meditation retreat center near Washington D.C. William has practiced meditation since 1973. WKYS personalities Deja Perez and Kelson will host the two hour long show. A roster of youth performers will entertain through dancing, positive rapping and poetry, coupled with a fashion show of upcoming young designers displaying their work, will give youth and young adults an exciting start to a safe and enriching school year. The event will also feature teen friendly information booths, from how to get a driver’s license, to how apply for community service hours for school. Booths include college and financial aid information, healthy lifestyle information, and afterschool and job program information.   Nick Flynn is the author of three memoirs, The Reenactments (Norton, 2013), The Ticking is the Bomb: A Memoir of Bewilderment (2010), and Another Bullshit Night in Suck City (2004)—currently being published under the title Being Flynn—which won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir and has been translated into fifteen languages. Another Bullshit Night in Suck City has been made into a film, Being Flynn, starring Robert DeNiro as Flynn's father, Julianne Moore as his mother, and Paul Dano as Nick. He is also the author of three books of poetry, The Captain Asks For a Show of Hands (Graywolf, 2011), Some Ether (Graywolf, 2000), which won the PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award, and Blind Huber (Graywolf, 2002).
• Ron Charles is the editor of The Washington Post's book section and a weekly fiction critic. For several years, he also edited The Post's "Poet's Choice" column in Book World. His reviews have won the National Book Critics Circle Award for best criticism and 1st place for Arts & Entertainment Commentary from the Society for Features Journalism. "The daughter of a prominent Palestinian father and a sophisticated Lebanese mother, Najla Said grew up in New York City, confused and conflicted about her cultural background and identity. Said knew that her parents identified deeply with their homelands, but growing up in a Manhattan world that was defined largely by class and conformity, she felt unsure about who she was supposed to be, and was often in denial of the differences she sensed between her family and those around her. The fact that her father was the famous intellectual and outspoken Palestinian advocate Edward Said only made things more complicated..." (read more)

In April 2010, Said completed a nine-week sold-out off Broadway run of her solo show, Palestine, which features some of the material in this book. She is a frequent speaker and performer at schools across the country, and lives in New York City.

Lyrics Revolt (2011, 50 min, view trailer), by Shannon Farhoud, Ashlene Ramadan, Melanie Fridgant, Rana Khaled Al Khatib - As pro-democracy revolutions spread through the Arab world, one sound in particular is echoing the hopes, dreams and frustrations of its people: hip hop. ‘Lyrics Revolt’ captures leading Arab artists who employ the sharp political edge of hip hop during this game-changing time for the MENA region and beyond. (Arabic and English, with English subtitles). After the film there will be a Q&A discussion with the audience about hip hop in the Arab world. The audience will be joined by several members of the DC-PFAF board. 

The DC Palestinian Film and Arts Festival (DC-PFAF) is a volunteer-run project organized by the DC chapter of the US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN-DC) in Washington, DC to showcase the work of Palestinian filmmakers and artists. It is the first effort of its kind in DC to shine the spotlight solely on Palestinian filmmakers.

Proceeds will support the DC Palestinian Film and Arts Festival (DC-PFAF) and BloomBars. Free popcorn and refreshments provided. BloomScreen Indie Film Night – is a weekly series of independent and foreign films, accompanied by discussions with filmmakers and other experts.

A day-long festival reflecting DC's literary past, present, and future and showcases the work of DC's resident poets, writers, and literary organizations, including Marie Arana, Edward P. Jones, George Pelecanos, and Richard McCann. 

This full day of events is sponsored by the Folger Shakespeare Library, Library of Congress and PEN/Faulkner. This day is made possible by support from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a media sponsorship by Slate. 

Highlights in the morning include a reading by DC Poet Laureate Dolores Kendrick, a reading curated by The American Poetry Museum on "Sterling Brown, DC's First Poet Laureate" and a panel hosted by Split this Rock, poetry festival, "Possessed of This City: Bringing the Spirit of DC Poetry to the Nation."
