Weekend East City Event Round Up: Surreal Resurgence Edition




The second round of 2011 East City exhibitions have arrived with five openings this weekend featuring surreal painters, sculpture, photography and a Belgian furniture designer premiering his work on this side of the Atlantic.

Friday January 14, 2011

Honfleur Gallery (1241 Good Hope Road, SE) will host two solo exhibitions including "New Work" by Jordan Kasey and "Controversial Characters of Portraits Past" by Eric Finzi. The opening reception begins at 7pm. Jordan Kasey a Baltimore artist paints surreal large size canvas while Finzi, a dermatological surgeon, uses syringes, propane torches and other nontraditional tools to create epoxy resin paintings. The exhibitions run through February 18, 2011


The Gallery at Vivid Solutions (2208 Martin Luther King, Jr Avenue SE) presents Chajana denHarder "A Space for the Transitory" an exhibit in which Dutch artist denHarder is simultaneously the subject, photographer and model until she finally “dissociates and let’s go”. The reception opens at 7pm. The exhibition runs through February 18, 2011

Evolve Urban Arts (1375 Maryland Avenue NE ) presents a group show entitled "Flights of Fancy: Elements of Surrealism" Saturday January 15 from 5pm to 8pm. The exhibition runs through February 26, 2011. The exhibition features the work of several local DC artists who are members of the Studio Gallery in Dupont Circle.


Conner Contemporary Art (1358 Florida Avenue, NE) presents two solo exhibitions "Windowboxing" by Cordy Ryman and "High Pressure System" by Brandon Morse with an opening reception from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibitions run through March 5, 2011. The exhibitions will showcase the painted sculptural assemblages by Cordy Ryman and real-time generative digital work by Brandon Morse


Just above Conner Contemporary, Industry Gallery (1358 Florida Avenue NE, second floor) presents “Fossilized”, the first Solo US Exhibition of Jens Praet. Praet’s designs are made from shredded magazines and documents. An opening reception will be held from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibition runs through February 26, 2011


Right next door to Conner Contemporary Art and Industry Gallery, G Fine Art (1350 Florida Ave, NE) will host a special reception for Graham Caldwell's "The Uncanny Valley" with an opening reception from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
