Vespers - a  Taizé-style Candlelit Evening of Singing Meditation, Silence and Reflection
every second Wednesday of the month, September through June
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Free
a light reception follows the service

Vespers - Wednesday, November 14

Vespers is modeled after the traditional Taizé worship service which uses silence, reflection and repetitive singing of short chants and rounds to quiet the mind and promote deep meditation. This candlelit evening service is designed to be a midweek respite from the fast pace of life.

The Taizé Community is an ecumenical monastic order in France founded in 1940 to promote peace and justice through prayer and meditation. Vespers services mirror Taizé-style attention to silence, holy words, and singing, but also includes other meditative traditions such as yogic singing and Buddhist chanting.

Helen Hayes Recommended Illyria, or What You Will is freely adapted from Shakespeare's classic comedy Twelfth Night by Jonelle Walker and Mitchell Hébert and is directed by Mitchell Hébert. This adaptation re-imagines Shakespeare's crossed-signal love story in a downtown Manhattan '80s dive bar, whose habitués are club kids of assorted genders and orientations who have come to the one place where they can be who they are. Walker's play TAME., a feminist take on The Taming of the Shrew, was produced by Avant Bard in 2016 and received a Helen Hayes Award nomination. Hébert has received Helen Hayes Awards for both acting (After the Fall) and directing (Glengarry Glen Ross) in addition to other nominations as an actor and director.

Advisory: This show, which is set in the 1980's New York City club scene, contains strong language, depictions of drug use, and risqué situation.

New this Season, a select number of Pay-What-You-Will seats will be available for all shows!

About the Pay-What-You-Will Program: For every Avant Bard performance a limited number of tickets are Pay What You Will, which means you can name your price. They do this because they believe universal stories need universal access. If you’re looking for edgy and intimate theatre that won’t break the bank, consider joining us through Pay What You Will. You can buy PWYW tickets online or over the phone beginning the Monday before each performance for a small minimum, or you can buy PWYW tickets at the door with no minimum, assuming seats are available. PWYW tickets can be exchanged for any performance in the same week, subject to availability. All Avant Bard tickets including PWYW are General Admission; seating is first-come first-served. If you'd like to know how much folks generally pay for Pay What You Will, our overall average ticket price is $20. But it's really up to you--and any amount is welcome. If they sell out of PWYW tickets online they plan to make social media announcements to prevent disappointed walk-ups.

The cast of Avant Bard’s ‘Illyria.’ (Top row:) Jenna Rossman, Frank Britton,
Ezra Tozian, Emma Loughran Hébert, Adam Lemos. (Bottom row:)
Miss Kitty LeLynx, Montana Monardes, Katie Gallagher, Christopher Henley,
Matthew Sparacino, Dani Stoller.
Write up from DC Metro Theater Arts: "Illyria reimagines Shakespeare’s comedy of mixed-signal love as a bohemian cabaret set in a Manhattan dive bar in the early 1980s, where identity, sex, and gender are what you will—and habitués find freedom to be who they truly are." “Illyria is the ultimate humanizing of Twelfth Night,” said Director and Co-Adapter Hébert.

“Everybody gets to tell their story unobstructed. All the characters are explored fully and completely. That includes a trans character; that includes gay men; that includes a straight man who may or may not be bisexual. It includes a pansexual woman and a drag queen. And it includes two women performing masculinity. They’re going to be sending it up, the way women can because of their ability to observe keenly the things men do. To me, that’s all about humanity.”  A cast of eleven will bring to life Illyria‘s characters, based loosely on Shakespeare’s but reconceived by Walker and Hébert to tease out truths for today."
