Friday, February 28th

Free organic popcorn and refreshments served

Join BloomBars and TransAfrica to celebrate February as African American History Month with a screening of "Miles of Smiles, Years of Struggle" (see trailer, 1982, 58 min), by Paul Wagner – tells the untold story of the Pullman porters who organized America’s first Black trade union – the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. This film presentation is made possible thanks to Bloombars' collaboration with TransAfrica – the oldest and largest African American human rights and social justice advocacy organization. The film will be followed by audience discussion moderated by Mwiza Munthali, the Public Outreach Director of TransAfrica.

The film "describes the harsh discrimination which lay behind the porters' smiling service. Narrator Rosina Tucker, a 100 year old union organizer and porter's widow, describes how after a 12 year struggle led by A. Philip Randolph, the porters won the first contract ever negotiated with black workers. This inspiring story of the Pullman porters addresses larger issues of work, race and dignity and provides one of the few accounts of African American life between the Civil War and the modern Civil Rights movement."

Enjoy live music, food and drink specials and show your support for affordable housing and tenant rights at this fundraiser at Haydee's in Mt Pleasant at this happy hour organized by the Latino Economic Development Center, a great organization based in Adams Morgan, that is one of two local organizations (the other is Housing Counseling Services) funded by grants and able to offer free services to tenants who wish to create Tenant Associations and learn more about their TOPA rights if their building is put up for sale. While the staff is bi-lingual, they work with all people, not just the Latino population.

You'll also have a chance to hear from residents from the Hope Cooperative, who just bought their building through DC’s Tenant Purchase program with support from the Housing Production Trust Fund, and from tenants in Mt Pleasant and Columbia Heights whose buildings are for sale and who are trying to buy them and keep their homes affordable. The Starry Mountain Singers are coming back to DC, this time to St Stephen's Church at 16th & Newton for just one night. I saw them perform the past few times they were in town at the Church of the Holy City and really enjoyed the concert. Read more about the band of their website.

"Shapenote songs, powerful gospel numbers, cowboy songs, haunting folk tunes, folk songs and sacred chants from the Republic of Georgia and Corsica, Early Music!"

The Starry Mountain Singers are: Stefan Amidon, Zara Bode, Avery Book, Gideon Crevoshay, Jeff Fellinger, Emily Miller, Nathan Morrison, & Suzannah Park.

The musical program features traditional songs from the United States, Europe and Caucasus Georgia. The American repertoire includes shape-note songs (a traditional New England song style), powerful gospel numbers, cowboy songs, and haunting folk tunes from the Appalachians. Songs from Corsica and Georgia provide a mixture of sacred and secular pieces that demonstrate the incredible range of unique singing traditions from those countries. This year's program also includes a diverse set of early music. Each member has contributed songs from his or her particular area of musical knowledge and expertise. The result is a dynamic and eclectic program that will delight all who enjoy performances of unique and energetic flavor.

Sprinkling light banter between his folk ramblings and blues confessionals, Harris Face has a voice that is at times nostalgic and hopeful, at times serious and ironic, but always full of the dreams and withdrawals of a DC political junkie."
