New this season! Avant Bard's shows now have Pay-What-You-Will seats available for every show! See more about how the new PWYW program works on the video here, or read the details here, or below.

A Misanthrope is a play about a cynic named Alceste who thinks insincerity is a sin. But the joke's on him when he falls for Celimine, an ingenue who's more than his match. Matt Minnicino's A Misanthrope distills Molière's best-known farce into quippy rhyming couplets and pokes fun at social flattery with a hot take on the absurdity of modern hot airs. "Hypocrisy has never been more hilarious."

"Moliere's comic classic was about mocking hypocrisy of the French aristocracy, but we're going to look at these themes through a more modern lens," said Director Megan Behm. "We've set A Misanthrope in the present at a fabulous vacation villa in the South of France during a booze-fueled pool party with the wealthy and wanna-be famous. The characters are international jet-setter types, filthy rich and in the prime of their lives. They are all mostly oblivious to the consequences of their actions. With money to burn, why be serious about anything? To me, this play is about the inauthentic and superficial selves people project into the world, and then what happens when they are trapped in these roles."

See calendar image for dates and times. All Saturday matinees will be followed by Unscripted Afterchats with members of the cast and creative team.

Remaining PWYW evening performances 7:30 pm

  • Saturdays: June 15, 22 & 29
Remaining PWYW matinee performances 2:00 pm
  • Saturdays: June 15, 22 & 29
  • Sundays: June 16, 23 & 30
About the Pay-What-You-Will Program: For every Avant Bard performance a limited number of tickets are Pay What You Will, which means you can name your price. They do this because they believe universal stories need universal access.

You can buy PWYW tickets online or over the phone beginning the Monday before each performance for a small minimum, or you can buy PWYW tickets at the door with no minimum, if seats are available. If they sell out of PWYW tickets online they plan to make social media announcements to prevent disappointed walk-ups. All Avant Bard tickets including PWYW are General Admission; seating is first-come first-served. If you'd like to know how much folks generally pay for Pay What You Will shows, the average ticket price is $20, half of the regular $40 ticket prices, but it's really up to you--and any amount is welcome.
