For more events please check out @FreeinDCBlog on twitter and the Free in DC page on facebook, search for "Free in DC" or click here! Much of the event content I cover comes from facebook and I don't always have time to craft individual posts on this site for every event I come across and I often post links to events on  @FreeinDCBlog on twittter and/or FreeinDC on facebook that aren't on the main site.

I tweet most every day, focusing on events happening that day, and some other events coming soon or ones that you might not find on the main site or on facebook. Also, if you aren't a twitter user you can just look at the page without needing to sign up for an account!

Next PWYW Show - Friday, March 29 at 7:30 pm

Avant Bard presents the acclaimed dark comedy Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks, starring Louis E. Davis and Jeremy Keith Hunter and directed by DeMone Seraphin. The play—a tensely funny and dead serious tragicomedy about two African American brothers, Lincoln and Booth, grappling for destiny—won Parks the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for drama, and the New York Times named it the best American play of the last 25 years.

Parks encapsulates 400 years of African American history in a Cain-and-Abel fable, where the promise of American Dream gets tested in the deception of a con game. They have depended on each other since their parents left, and until recently they counted on Lincoln's grifting to get by. Now Lincoln has gone straight, impersonating his namesake in a carnival where tourists pay to play assassin. When Booth resolves to become the greatest con man of all time, the brothers struggle over how best to play the tough hand America dealt them.

Advisory: This show contains strong language, adult themes, and depictions of gun violence.

"Topdog/Underdog is an incredible play and it's massive," said Seraphin. "It's an intimate two-hander, but the themes and the ideas in the play and the relationships between the two brothers in the play are enormous.”

New this season! Avant Bard's shows now have Pay-What-You-Will seats available for every show! See more about how the new PWYW program works on the video here, or read the details here, or below.

About the Pay-What-You-Will Program: For every Avant Bard performance a limited number of tickets are Pay What You Will, which means you can name your price. They do this because they believe universal stories need universal access. If you’re looking for edgy and intimate theatre that won’t break the bank, consider joining us through Pay What You Will. You can buy PWYW tickets online or over the phone beginning the Monday before each performance for a small minimum, or you can buy PWYW tickets at the door with no minimum, assuming seats are available. PWYW tickets can be exchanged for any performance in the same week, subject to availability. All Avant Bard tickets including PWYW are General Admission; seating is first-come first-served. If you'd like to know how much folks generally pay for Pay What You Will, our overall average ticket price is $20. But it's really up to you--and any amount is welcome. If they sell out of PWYW tickets online they plan to make social media announcements to prevent disappointed walk-ups.
