In after-school residencies, Ford's Theatre teaching artists use oratory to help students build speech, writing and leadership skills. In year-long after-school programs, students learn skills for self-expression using the words of Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and others to learn the tools of rhetoric and oratory. As they progress, students write and deliver their own speeches. They perform on the Ford’s Theatre stage and take trips to hear oratory in action. Read more here.

Brian Williams creates abstract, otherworldly landscape oil paintings on aluminum. While the paintings evoke dunes or seascapes with varying naturalistic elements, the work disrupts our idea of our relationships to natural settings. The title of his solo exhibit “The Lonely Drone” calls to mind an imaginary view from a drone flying over a dream landscape

It is well know that Johannes Brahms played a big part in the international fame that befell Antonin Dvorák after he submitted his work for the Austrian State Stipendium. But it is much lesser known that Brahms was “visibly overcome by the mastery and talent of this unknown individual.” This tremendous pairing in friendship is analogous when pairing their music and their inventive, beautiful melodies that were seemingly endless.

Evening - Author Talk about Looting in Literature at the Arts Club - Farragut West
Writing the Wrongs: Looting in Literature
7:00pm
Stories of looting of the world’s cultural heritage abound in the press today. Almost daily the destruction and theft of antiquities appear listed among the atrocities of war. But these crimes are not limited to wartime, and they are not new. Questions of looting and how to address it are thousands of years old, and writers have grappled with these issues for just as long. Archaeologist Zoë Kontes will discuss the intersection between looting and literature, with a focus on Mediterranean antiquities. She will also suggest texts for further reading on these topics, both ancient and modern, including Margaret M. Miles, Art as Plunder: The Ancient Origins of Debate about Cultural Property, and Chasing Aphrodite: The Hunt for Looted Antiquities at the World's Richest Museum, by Jason Felch and Ralph Frammolino.

With introductions by representatives of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Embassy of Israel.
About the film: An Apartment in Berlin (Ein Apartment in Berlin) (Germany, 2013, 84 min., Director: Alice Agneskirchner). An estimated 20,000 young Israelis have moved to Germany’s capital. They are mostly attracted by its cosmopolitan and international atmosphere, the low cost of living and the good infrastructure, all of which make life fairly easy. But Berlin was also the place from which the Nazis planned the systematic extermination of the Jews. Three generations after the Holocaust, does this fact matter to young Israelis? How does it affect their lives today? Three of them want to find out what it would do to them to embark on a journey into the past by retracing the life and refurnishing the original apartment of a Jewish family from Berlin once deported by the Nazis.
