Guests will vote on who receives the People's Choice Award, but an independent panel of nonprofit professionals will vote on who receives the 2013 Changemaker of the Year award. This exhibit was born out of a personal experience with a neighborhood homeless man who, with help, was able to turn his life around. From the crisis of homelessness in our city came a desire to create an exhibition based on blankets, beds, and shelter. From that point, Sean wrote: “I then wondered if the level of security of having a place to sleep affected how we dream. I was thinking about how we all enter the world of dreams, regardless of where we sleep. I thought that I would create a series of works based on the dreams of others. Through conversations … about art and social issues, my idea for The Luxury of Dreams series was born. I started soliciting dreams from friends, colleagues, collectors, other artists, and social media connections.”

Fine artist turned dream catcher Sean Hennessey is a mixed and multi-media artist based in Washington, DC. Working in glass, concrete, steel, light and video, Sean creates imaginative wall relief works deriving narrative content from philosophical, mythological, historical and personal experiences.

A portion of proceeds from sales will go toward helping to support Thrive DC, which works to prevent and end homelessness by providing vulnerable individuals a comprehensive range of services to help stabilize their lives.

Shot from above, filmmaker Peter Mettler's Petropolis offers an unmatched view of the Alberta tar sands, the second largest natural oil reserve in the world. With almost no narration and replete with observational long takes, these aerial views provide insight into this massive industrialized effort and its impact on Canada's unspoiled wilderness. Director Peter Mettler will introduce the film and take questions following the screening. Gallery admission is included.

"Found Memories" (Histórias que Só Existem Quando Lembradas) (2011, 98 min), by Júlia Murat – A young photographer arrives in an impoverished rural community in northern Brazil, where the elder residents grow to trust her with their personal recollections. (Portuguese with English subtitles). (see trailer) The film will be followed by a Q&A discussion with the audience along with Iane Campos-Siddique, organizer of The Washington Portuguese Language Meetup Group and a university lecturer in Portuguese.

This month's speakers:

Evan Feeney, a local climate activist with DC Divest who works full-time at the Natural Reources Defense Council as Program Assistant in Government Affairs. DC Divest is a citizen driven campaign working to end the DC's investments in dirty, destructive fossil fuels and companies like Exxon and Chevron. The Fossil Fuel Divestment Act of 2013 is set for public hearing on November 26th and DC Divest invites all interested citizens to attend in support.


Greg Belling of Washington Bike Area Association, a bicycle advocacy group for the DC area. Greg Belling coordinates major infrastructure and trail advocacy. Greg began at WABA in 2010 as an event assistant working on the busy event schedule including planning the 2010 & 2011 Bike to Work Day events. In 2012, Greg transitioned to his current position in advocacy.

Local musician Sam McCormally, formerly of Ugly Purple Sweater, will be playing a solo set at the Luce Center in the Smithsonian American Art Museum as part of the "Luce Unplugged" performance series. He'll be joined on vocals by Letitia VanSant, aka Sandy Robson. McCormally is "a singer, composer and instrumentalist whose unusual melodies, evocative lyrics, and dynamic performances have earned him comparisons to Freddy Mercury and Arcade Fire." The performance will begin with a talk about "Study for Construction of the Dam," a painting by William Gropper in the museum's collection, pictured above. Sam will also be playing a bunch of new songs, including a new one written especially for the occasion called "Constructing the Dam."
