PAST: Weekend Highlights! SAT, Dec 11th & SUN, Dec 12th, Free

Excerpted from Freestylin' D.C. post!

Saturday

Show your support for emerging artists from around the globe. Transformer Gallery hosts an open house for its new show ALPTRAUM! (German for "nightmare") from 1 to 7 p.m. This comprehensive group exhibition features small-to medium-sized works on paper in a variety of disciplines (painting, drawing, screen prints, photography, collage) by an international mix of nearly 100 artists.

You may have seen its sister exhibit at the Arlington Arts Center, and now Party Crashers: Comic Book Culture invades the Art World comes to the Terrace Gallery at Artisphere. The opening reception will be from 8 to 11 p.m.

If you want to listen to good music and and do good all at once, check out the second annual holiday fundraiser at Bobby Lew's Saloon in Adams Morgan. Featured performers include Margot MacDonald (pictured), Hair Raid, Human Country Jukebox, and Zedicus. Proceeds support the More than Me Foundation. The event's free, but it is a fundraiser, after all, so donations are appreciated.

Sunday

Novelist Israel Heller reads from Death in McMurdo, and Kathryn Johnson reads from The Gentleman Poet: A Novel of Love, Danger, and Shakespeare's The Tempest at 2 p.m. as part of the Open Door Reading Series at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda.

The Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic performs a Symphonic Choral Concert featuring Schumann's Concertstück for Four Solo Horns and Orchestra and Handel's Judas Maccabaeus with the NOVA Community Chorus. The free concert will take place at the Church of the Epiphany at 1317 G St. NW at 3 p.m.

This Sunday’s concert at the National Gallery of Art takes a holiday spin with Ensemble Galilei performing traditional Christmas carols at 6:30 p.m.
