Lowther discusses and sign his new book The African American Odyssey of John Kizell: A South Carolina Slave Returns to Fight the Slave Trade in His African Homeland. "This biography follows Kizell from his capture and enslavement in West Africa through his life in South Carolina on the eve of the American Revolution to his eventual return to Africa. Fleeing bondage, Kizell served with the British military in the Revolutionary War and returned to his homeland to help found a settlement for freed slaves in Sierra Leone. He spent decades battling European and African slave traders urging them to stop selling Africans into foreign bondage."
Lowther was a development official working in Africa for forty-four years. He was an early Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone, and later became one of the architects of Africare. He served as Southern Africa Regional Director at Africare from 1984 until he retired in 2007.
