In the Works in Progress Gallery: "The series Lumen is an ongoing experiment to create and test handmade 4x5 film cameras. Made from scrap boxes, McCarty seeks to reexamine the fundamentals of photography in an era when the science of image making is far removed from the act of taking a picture. Both photographs, and the cameras that created the images will be on display. Created over the course of two years, Lumen is a component of McCarty's graduate thesis at Duke University where she was a member of the inaugural MFA class in Experimental and Documentary Arts."

“Almost every substance is altered by light, some to a greater extent than others. On this phenomenon photography depends.” -Nicéphore Niépce
