Art Crimes: The White Hush
at The Dunes in Columbia Heights
Free
On view Friday, August 2nd - end of August
J.Coleman is a DC-based painter, sculptor, and muralist who has shown extensively in the U.S. and had his first international solo show in 2011. His stylized work most often deals with the male figure and with heroic archetypes evocative of social realism and comic books. Coleman is an artist in residence at a private school in southern Maryland, where he teaches painting, printmaking and sculpture. In addition he is the founder of Capitol Combat Sports: a judo and jiujitsu club with locations in DC & VA. Coleman's show, The White Hush, (taken from a Yeats poem) opens at the Dunes Gallery August second and will be the artist's third solo exhibition in Washington DC.
The White Hush: The works depict the heroic archetype male figures and female figures suggesting fertility goddess. The works are a commentary on the mythos associated with comic books, video games, and popular culture... The compositions invite the viewer to consider the pairing of those coupled in the paintings; the dynamics presented by the metaphorical sparring partners and the residual effects that remain after any conflict, be it internal or external.
