This Friday night the Freer will screen the film "Lessons of Darkness" Werner Herzog’s controversial documentary that surveys the wreckage left in the wake of the Gulf War. (Dir.: Werner Herzog, Germany, 1992, 50 min., English, German, and Arabic with English subtitles) as part of the film series "The Military Eye: War, Aesthetics, and the Ethics of Aerial Surveillance." Screenings and discussions explore how aerial photography has affected the perception and evolution of warfare. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition "Shadow Sites: Recent Work by Jananne Al-Ani" on view through February 10th at the Sackler, which is connected to the Freer.
