PAST: FILM: BloomScreen and TransAfrica present African Heritage Month films on Timbuktu & the Nile Valley TUES, Sept 24th from 7:00pm - 8:30pm, All ages, by donation, suggested $10
BloomScreen Indie Film Night is a weekly series of independent and foreign films, accompanied by discussions with filmmakers and other experts.
This week, join BloomBars and TransAfrica as they celebrate African Heritage Month. Filmmaker, Howard alum and noted African scholar Dr. Steffan A. Spencer will join the post-film discussion. The moderator will be Mwiza Munthali, Public Outreach Director of TransAfrica.
Films this week include: The Manuscripts of Timbuktu (2009, 52 min), by Zola Maseko – examines the life of one of Africa’s greatest scholars – Ahmed Baba – and the ancient manuscripts from Timbuktu, one the ancient worlds’ preeminent centers of learning. Kissed by the Sun (2013, 15 min), by Steffan A. Spencer – celebrates the vibrant cultural continuity connecting the great Nile Valley Civilizations of Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan – once known to the world as Khemet, Axum/Punt and Nubia. Till this day, these lands feature monuments and traditions viscerally know by the world, which still retain their power to invoke wonder.
This film presentation was made possible thanks to our collaboration with TransAfrica – the oldest and largest African American human rights and social justice advocacy organization.
