An evening of spoken word poetry, drumming and visual remixing to celebrate African Independence at the National Museum of African Art, curated by Simone Jacobson. DJ EYE.AM will spin Afrobeat tunes and produce sound and video art based on footage, music, dub poetry, and speeches related to the theme. The program will be hosted by Fred Joiner, curator of public programs at the American Poetry Museum, who will also lead the artist talk-back and Q&A session following the performances.

Event program:
6:30 - 7:50 p.m. - Poets & drummer perform
7:50 - 8:15 p.m. - Talk-back with artists led by Fred Joiner
8:15 - 9:30 p.m. - Dance Party with tunes by DJ EYE AM

  • DJ EYE AM (spinning Afrobeat / creating video art)
  • The Dri Fish (spoken word poet from Nigeria accompanied by live band with beatboxer, vocalist, keyboard player, bass player & guitar)
  • Kuku (singer/poet from Nigeria)
  • Pages Matam (spoken word poet from Cameroon)
  • Candice Iloh (spoken word poet from Nigeria)
