"On an expedition to Peru to search for ancient ruins, Hiram Bingham III, a 35-year-old assistant professor of Latin American history at Yale University, was directed to what has become one of the world's most famous archaeological sites, Machu Picchu. Bingham first encountered the Inca mountaintop retreat on July 24, 1911. With financial support from Yale University and the National Geographic Society, he returned on two subsequent expeditions, clearing the ruins and photographing and mapping the site.
