PAST: Annual NEA National Heritage Fellowship Concert at Strathmore this FRI, Sept 23rd at 8:00pm, Free, however tickets are required

Friday, September 23rd
8:00pm
Free, tickets are required - see note about tickets*

At this point, all of the advance tickets have been reserved but there are usually lots of tickets that go unclaimed so there is a very good chance you can get in still. The stand-by line forms at 7:00pm. I try to go to this one every year, always impressed by the variety of performances.

Ten of our nation's master artists take the stage in this celebration of the 2011 National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellows. From the vibrant suits and rocking music of Mardi Gras Indian Chief Bo Dollis (pictured) to the masterful choreography and rhythmic drum beats of the San Jose Taiko, this concert will spotlight our country's diverse traditional arts heritage. Nick Spitzer, host of public radio's American Routes, will emcee this evening of conversations, demonstrations, and performances. Photo of Bo Dollis above by Derek S. Bridges.

The 2011 NEA National Heritage Fellows are:
  • Laverne Brackens, quilter, Fairfield, TX
  • Bo Dollis, Mardi Gras Indian Chief, New Orleans, LA
  • Roy and PJ Hirabayashi, taiko drum leaders, San Jose, CA
  • Ledward Kaapana, ukulele and slack key guitarist, Kaneohe, HI
  • Frank Newsome, Old Regular Baptist singer, Haysi, VA
  • Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro, pandeiro player and percussionist, Los Angeles, CA
  • Warner Williams, Piedmont blues songster, Gaithersburg, MD
  • Yuri Yunakov, Bulgarian saxophonist, Bloomfield, NJ
2011 Best Lomax Hawes Award
  • Jim Griffith, folklorist, Tucson, AZ
*Ticket Info: Looks like the advance tickets are sold out but I can tell you from past experience that folks always show up with extras so there is a good chance that you can get in, especially if you don't mind sitting by yourself. What happens is that all advance tickets are valid until 15 minutes prior to the performance (7:45 PM), at which time all unclaimed tickets left at will call will be given to those waiting in the stand-by line. Folks usually return extras as well so that they can be redistributed. The line will begin forming at 7:00pm. It's a good idea to be there early so you can get in.

For individuals unable to secure advanced tickets, a stand-by line begins at 7PM, outside the Music Center the evening of the performance. No line may form before the designated time. At 7:45 PM all tickets distributed in advance become null and void and patrons in the stand-by line will be allowed entry subject to available seating."
