Thomas Sankara: The Upright Man (2006, 52 min) (view trailer), by Robin Shuffield – examines the story of African leader Thomas Sankara, who initiated revolutionary changes in Burkina Faso.
Sankara came to power in 1983, in a popularly supported coup and immediately launched the most ambitious program for social and economic change ever attempted on the African continent. He even changed the name of the country from the French colonial Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, ‘Land of Upright Men.’
The screening will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Mwiza Munthali - the Public Outreach Director of TransAfrica. He is also an activist and the host of Washington, DC-based Pacifica radio show (WPFW 89.3FM) “Africa Now.”
