Film Screening - Double Feature
10:00am - 3:30pm
Two interpretations of the ill-fated French queen's life, created nearly 70 years apart, highlight the varying legacies of the misunderstood and oft-maligned Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette (1938, 149 min.) features Norma Shearer and is based in part on a 1933 biography by Stefan Zweig. For her 2006 film Marie Antoinette (123 min., PG-13), director Sofia Coppola drew upon historian Antonia Fraser's biography of the hapless queen. Both films offer lavish sets and costumes, but the former portrays the queen as an irresponsible and foolish woman, whereas the latter shows her as a teenager unprepared to shoulder the burden of the crown. The NMWA invites you to join them for one, or both films.
