"Poetry Out Loud" District of Columbia Finals. Join the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities at the National Portrait Gallery in Chinatown for the District Finals of Poetry Out Loud - a contest that encourages youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
The "Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest" was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is administered in partnership with the State Arts Agencies of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
The DC Finals will be hosted by Free, of WPGC 95.5 and will feature 10 students from across the city competing for $50,000 in scholarships by reciting great works of poetry. The winner will represent Washington, D.C. in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in April! Come early to check out the exhibition Poetic Likeness: Modern American Poets with "Ask Me" guides in the museum.
Save the Dates for the National Finals! The 2013 Poetry Out Loud National Finals will take place April 28th - 30th at GWU's Lisner Auditorium in DC!
