Staged Reading of The Robben Island Bible at the
Folger Shakespeare Library
Monday, June 3rd
7:00pm
Free, RSVP recommended to ensure your space

Written and directed by Matthew Hahn, this staged reading stars Emmy Award winner Andre deShields, Nasser Faris, Nehal Joshi, KenYatta Rogers, and David Schalkwyk. Book signing to follow the reading.

The play is presented in association with the upcoming Folger Exhibition: A Book Behind Bars: The Robben Island Shakespeare, on view through September 29th at the Folger Shakespeare Library and with the release of Hamlet's Dream: Something Something by David Schalkwyk.

About: Political prisoners at South Africa's Robben Island in the 1970s signed their names next to Shakespeare passages that spoke to them. Hahn's 2008 interviews with many of them are juxtaposed with Shakespeare's words in a play that explores how life imitates art. Nelson Mandela signed his name next to a section from Julius Caesar in a copy of Shakespeare's Complete Works on December 16, 1977.
