In honor of Zumbi, and Black Consciousness Month in Brazil, BloomBars and TransAfrica present a screening of Rhythmic Uprising (view trailer)
(Insurreição Rítmica)(2008, 65 min), by Ben Watkins, co-produced by Paulo Rogrio Nunes – looks beyond the Carnaval celebrations to show how local cultural leaders are using Afro-Brazilian performing arts to fight racism, social exclusion and inequality in Bahia, Brazil.

After the screening, there will be a Q&A with African-American author and activist, Clarence Lusane; DC-based, Brazilian dance instructor & performer, Zezeh Brazil; and Afro-Brazilian media professional, activist and film producer, Paulo Rogerio Nunes (from Brazil, via Skype).

This film presentation is made possible thanks to a collaboration with TransAfrica – the oldest and largest African American human rights and social justice advocacy organization promoting diversity and equity in the foreign policy arena and justice for the African World.
