Every year, Subcontinental Drift  uses the money it raises at its open mic to stage a larger, curated event for the community. This year, Sub Drift is proud to present a staged reading of new play-in-progress, Meena's Dream, by Anu Yadav, one of D.C.'s most dynamic performers. Directed by Caleen Jennings and with music by Anjna Swaminathan, Rajna Swaminathan and Sam McCormally. This is a formal, staged reading of a work-in-progress, preceded by a musical performance and followed by a talkback. Share your voice in the development of this play!

About the play: With one actress and three musicians, Meena's Dream is a coming-of-age tale about seven-year-old Indian American Meena, whose only wish is for her mother Aisha to be well, while Hindu God Lord Krishna seeks Meena's help in his epic hour of need. Meena struggles to make sense of sorrow through the fantastical landscape of her own imagination, set to a live, original score combining South Indian classical music, contemporary jazz, and indie rock.

About the artist: Anu Yadav is a D.C.-based writer and performer. She recently returned from performances of Midsummer Night's Dream in Beijing, China through the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a recipient of the Creative Communities Initiative grant, and multiple recipient of the D.C. Commission of the Arts and Humanities fellowship. In January she worked with acclaimed Indian street theater troupe Jana Natya Manch (People’s Theatre Front), and presented a workshop of Meena's Dream at Studio Safdar in Delhi, India through funding from the UMD School of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies where she is currently a Masters of Fine Arts candidate in Performance. The full production of Meena's Dream debuts February 1-2, 2013 at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
