Evening - Talk about Inspirational Speeches at UMD - College Park, MD

Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches are separated by almost 100 years, yet they share a compelling similarity: both speeches make the seemingly impossible appear not only possible but desirable. We'll hear from Steven D. Cohen, visiting assistant professor and managing director of UMD's Oral Communication Program, Maryland State Delegate Heather Mizeur, Elsa Barkley Brown, a UMD professor specializing in African American history and political culture, and Robert Lehrman, who has been the speechwriter for dozens of Democratic political figures including Vice President Al Gore and is author of The Political Speechwriter's Companion.

Free, however tickets are required. Tickets are available in person at the Ford's Theatre box office (free) or online at www.fords.org (Ticketmaster fees apply).

This panel discussion focuses on and draws lessons from three incidents connected to gender, sexual orientation, racial or cultural bias. Featuring Dave O'Malley (former Laramie sheriff during the Matthew Shepard murder investigation and trial); Billy Rowles (former Jasper sheriff during the James Byrd Jr. murder investigation and trial; and members of KhushDC.
